New York Film Critics Circle Awards

Carol, directed by the wonderful Todd Haynes, came away the big winner at this year’s New York Film Critics Circle Awards this past week. The 50s era drama, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, won Best Picture, Best Director for Mr. Haynes, Best Screenplay for Phyllis Nagy, and Best Cinematography for Edward Lachman. This is huge and fully places this critically heralded drama front and center for Golden Globe, SAG and Oscar attention. I understand that just because the critics love it does not necessarily mean the sometimes boring or complacent Academy will abide, but Haynes is very respected and the film, which I am dying to see when it finally opens here in Austin, is a favorite amongst many film journalists and bloggers and has been since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The same goes for George Miller’s massively entertaining and old school Mad Max: Fury Road, another critical darling that hopefully will get some much deserved Academy love. Here is a full list of winners. Enjoy.
