66th Annual ACE Eddie Awards

mad-max  trailer

ACE Eddie Awards nominations were announced earlier today, and the big, surprising omission was that Spotlight, the film that has been winning critics, after critics award was not one of the final five on the dramatic side. Big snub and could mean trouble, at least in the editing category, when the Oscar nomination come out in a few weeks. Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Sicario!!! and Star Wars: The Force Awakens were the five nominees on the dramatic side. On the comedy side, it was Ant-Man, The Big Short, Joy, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, and Trainwreck. This is somewhat startling that Spotlight, a superb film with seamless cutting and structure, was left out. I do not know if this means it will not make it in the Best Film Editing category at the Oscars, but this omission has given some intrigue to what is still a wide open race. This looks to be where the industry is leaning. Can Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which I finally saw this afternoon and thought the editing was quite good, crack the top five at the Oscars? Not sot fast as I think it is just luster and nostalgia from the Star Wars lovers and original generation. My updated five at the Academy Awards are:

  1. Mad Max: Fury Road
  2. The Big Short
  3. Spotlight
  4. The Martian
  5. The Revenant

I still think that Spotlight will get in the editing category. The last time a film won Best Picture without receiving a best film editing nomination was…last year with Birdman. So, just because the film may not receive the nomination does not necessarily mean it will not win Best Picture, but, it does not hurt. I love seeing Sicario in the mix. A film that seems to have been forgotten, but is such a high quality piece of filmmaking and I easily expect Roger Deakins to receive his 13th cinematography nomination.

My new Academy Awards predictions will be posted tomorrow night. Here is the complete list of nominations in multiple formats. Enjoy!
