Here are the Criterion Collection releases for the month of November, and at the end of this post, I am posting October titles as well. I did not get around to it last month. But, inconsistencies aside, November is another stellar month for the Criterion Collection. Lets start with the release of Marlon Brando’s only directorial effort, One-Eyed Jacks (1961). A western like none other. The not-so traditional western, along with Brando’s sense and drive for naturalism in acting, makes this western a must see and one that shoots to the top of my list for the month of November. Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg over saw the restoration, and Scorsese delivers an introduction on the disc. One-Eyed Jacks will be released on Blu-ray and DVD editions on November 22nd.
Then we get two classics, although different in style and tone, from Japan. First, Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams (1990), a series of eight vignettes from the masters nighttime visions. Having seen almost all of Kurosawa’s films, this is one that as always eluded me. I do not know why, but I cannot wait to see this late film, which includes a performance by Martin Scorsese as Vincent van Gogh. Dreams will be released on Blu-ray and DVD editions on November 15th. Secondly, the long awaited release of the manga adapted collection Lone Wolf and Cub gets a Criterion release. The set includes all six films, released between 1972 and 1974, and follows a shogun executioner and his infant son who roam the countryside helping those in need and seeking vengeance on the murderers of his wife. Lone Wolf and Cub will be released on Blu-ray and DVD editions on November 8th.
We also get two films from some of our finest contemporary directors. Paul Thomas Anderson finally joins the collection with his masterful and awkward work of loneliness and romance, Punch-Drunk Love (2002). Featuring one of the few fine performances from Adam Sandler, and two standout turns from Emily Watson and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, this is a stellar addition to the collection and one I am dying to own. Punch-Drunk Love will be released on Blu-ray and DVD editions on November 15th. Finally, we get another film from the wonderful New York director Noah Baumbach, with his fantastic, somewhat autobiographical The Squid and the Whale (2005). The film contains exceptional performances from Laura Linney, Jeff Daniels, Jesse Eisenberg and Owen Kline, and was shot in super 16mm! A great addition from Baumbach and the film will be released on Blu-ray and DVD editions on November 22nd.
