Gotham Awards Winners

The awards season officially kicked off with the Gotham Awards last night and the big winner was Moonlight from Barry Jenkins. The film, which I will finally be seeing this week, won Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and received a Special Jury Award for Ensemble Performance. This small, but powerful picture is almost assured a Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination, and if Jenkins receives a DGA nod, I think he is a lock for a Best Director nomination as well. The other big winner was Isabelle Huppert who won Best Actress for her role in Elle. It is still early in the game and just because she won her does not assure her an Oscar nomination, but it definitely helps her chances. Personally, I would love to see her win.

The season is in full swing now and these early should not be taken too seriously when it comes to Oscar nominations, but they sure do not hurt either. And remember, La La Land was not nominated by the small panel of critics that choose these awards, so it is still the frontrunner for now. Full list of winners below. Enjoy!
