Final Oscar Predictions

Tomorrow, bright and early on, 89th Academy Awards nominations will be announced. The one thing that is for certain is that La La Land, Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea and Arrival are sure to dominate. Then it gets a little interesting. Will Isabelle Huppert be nominated for Best Actress? Will Viggo Mortensen be nominated for Best Actor? Did enough of the Academy see and, or, appreciate the brilliance of Scorsese’s Silence to get it multiple nominations? Will Best Director have the exact same nominees as the DGA? And, as always, what will be the biggest surprise and snub this year? What one film or actor be left out that has received a tremendous amount nominations throughout the critic and guild races? Many questions will be answered tomorrow morning.

January Oscar Predictions Update

We are getting closer, and closer to the Oscar nominations. The race for nominations is slowly settling into place, with a few surprises in store. The Best Picture race is down to there films —  La La Land, Manchester by the Sea, and Moonlight. Any other film that would win at the Oscars would be a huge shock, and if one of these three films were not to be nominated, it would be even more shocking. The DGA and PGA nominations will really settle the Best Picture and Director fields. Which films do the guilds love the most? I know La La Land did not receive a SAG nomination for Best Ensemble, but it is a two lead film, will small supporting roles around. After those main three, the field is up in the air. I believe the only solid nomination is Fences, and the rest of the field could easily surprise.

Director is a three way race between Chazelle, Lonergan, and Jenkins. The DGA might decide who actually wins. It could be any of the three. The other two spots are really up for debate and could be filled by Scorsese, Washington, Villeneuve, Gibson or Mackenzie. Who knows where it goes after the big three.

Best Actor is a two-way race between Affleck and Washington. Does Mortensen get a nomination? He did receive a Globe and SAG nomination, and the film received a Best Ensemble nomination with SAG as well. I think he is in, but what about the next two slots. Hanks, Garfield, Gosling, or Egerton…

Best Actress is the most exciting and one where anything could happen. Stone and Portman are at the front of the pack, but watch out for Bening (she still has not won and it is a shame), Streep, Adams, Negga, Huppert, and Chastain. It will interesting who gets nominated and who actually wins.

All of my predictions are below and I will have one more set predictions before the Oscar nominations are announced on Tuesday, January 24th. Enjoy!!!

2017 Screen Actors Guild Nominations

Last week, the SAG Nominations were announced and the big stunner was the absence of La La Land from Best Ensemble. Now, the picture is really a two-hander and Gosling and Stone both received nominations, but it has taken that film’s perceived frontrunner status out the window. I do not believe it is in trouble the least, being that it is a film that mainly focuses on two characters and is not a massive ensemble, but it is interesting that it did not get a nod. The PGA and DGA will tell how strong La La Land is going forward. Kudos for Viggo Mortensen and the ensemble of Captain Fantastic!!! Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight still hanging in there strong. I think it is still a three-way race for Best Picture between Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea and La La Land, with Fences and possibly Silence right behind. Continue to watch out for Hacksaw Ridge. It is doing well so far with the big awards.

2017 Golden Globe Nominations

This morning the 2017 Golden Globe Nominations were announced and if we found anything about the race, which is inching closer to those Oscar nominations, is that the three main films — La La Land, Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea — solidified there place. These three films have been the critical darlings of the year and should easily be leading the field for the Oscars. All three received Picture, Acting, Directing and Screenplay nominations. If any of these three were not to receive multiple Academy Awards nominations, especially in the main categories, it would be a shock.

Hell or High Water, Nocturnal Animals, Lion and Hacksaw Ridge showed up big as well. This does not necessarily mean they are locks for Academy Award nominations, but this definitely helps. Mel Gibson received a Best Director nomination for Hacksaw Ridge and it seems, at least for now, this is a bit of “welcome back to the club” nod for Gibson. The film is good, not great, and he is one hell of a director, but the DGA will really determine if has the goods come Oscar time.

Now, the misses. Not one single nomination for Martin Scorsese’s Silence. I, of course, have not seen the film yet, but I am sure it will be one of the year’s best. Did they see it time or did they really not enjoy it… Denzel Washington’s Fences received acting nominations for Washington and Viola Davis, but that was it. Not Best Picture, Director or Screenplay. And, I was a little surprised that Michael Shannon did not receive a Supporting Actor nod for Nocturnal Animals, but his co-star, Aaron Taylor Johnson, did. The HFPA evidently really liked Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool, as well.

Full list of film and television nominations below. The SAG, PGA, and DGA will really put things in to focus come Oscar time. The only thing for sure, La La Land, Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea, are locks.
